“Shakespeare Competition”
February 27th, 2011
Central Library, Indianapolis
The Annual Shakespeare Competition among Indiana high school students will be held at 2 PM. Each participant is a high school winner, and the top three at the Competition will receive cash prizes. The Indiana winner will participate at the National ESU Shakespeare Competition in New York City.




“The Sir Evelyn Wrench Memorial Speaker Dinner”

This annual event honors the vision of Sir Evelyn Wrench, a leading figure in the founding of The English-Speaking Union in Great Britain and the founder of The English-Speaking Union of the United States. Cash-bar followed by dinner followed by lecture by Jason M. Kelly, Ph.D., professor at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis, on “The Culture of Dilettantism and the British Enlightenment”, based on Professor Kelly’s new book being published by the Yale University Press. The evening will also feature remarks by Kim Williams-Pulfer, the ESU Indianapolis Branch’s 2009 British Summer School Fellow. A teacher of English and Social Studies at Park Tudor School, Ms. Pulfer will talk about her experiences at the University of Oxford.

“Much Ado About Shakespeare”

The Branch’s annual fund-raiser for our Shakespeare Competitions and Shakespeare workshops. This year the event will feature an elegant cocktail buffet with entertainment by The Indiana Ballet Company, performing dances with music and choreography inspired by Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”.

This workshop on performing Shakespeare will be conducted by Tim Hardy, a prize-winning British actor who has performed around the world, earned membership at the Royal Shakespeare Company and taught at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. “From Lord Balfour To Today: Background On Challenges To Middle East Peace”

A cocktail reception and the superb Woodstock Sunday Brunch Buffet will be followed by remarks by Donald Knebel, a distinguished lawyer and student of the Middle East, where English-speaking peoples have been involved for centuries, from the Crusades to Great Britain’s Balfour Declaration to the present.

“British Universities Summer School”
January-February 2010, and July 2010
For over 30 years, the ESU Indianapolis Branch has been awarding a grant each year to a secondary school teacher from Central Indiana, to help support summer studies in Britain. In recent years, these Summer Schools have been offered at the University of Edinburgh (Scottish Universities International Summer School), by the Globe Theatre in London, and by the University of Oxford. Applications for the $3,000 grant are usually made to the ESU Indianapolis Branch during January or February, and the Summer School is usually held in July. “Walter Hines Page Scholar”
March 10 – 14, 2010
Sponsored by the British and American ESU organizations, a Page Scholar is a British teacher who visits the United States on a multi-week trip to study American education. The Page Scholar visiting Indianapolis in 2010 will be Suzi McGuiggan, who has a special interest in teaching youngsters with autism. The ESU Indianapolis Branch will arrange the Page Scholar’s visits to local schools and offer ESU members the chance to meet the Page Scholar at several social events.

A cocktail reception followed by the Woodstock Sunday Brunch Buffet, followed by remarks by Richard Miles, who will talk about the “British Telly Club” and how British TV shows get broadcast on our local PBS station.

A Sunday Brunch Buffet, featuring a presentation by artist Rosanna Hardin Hall, well known for her charming paintings of gardens in Italy and England.

“The ESU - Indiana University Fellow”

A Sunday Brunch Buffet, featuring remarks and a performance by the 2009-2010 ESU-Indiana University Fellow, Richard Monk, a graduate student in the Performing Arts.

“The Queen’s Garden Party”

The ESU Indianapolis Branch’s very special annual event, in honor of the Queen’s Official June Birthday.
