Dear Members of the Indianapolis Branch of The English-Speaking Union:
On behalf of the board of directors of the Indianapolis Branch, we invite your participation in our
Annual Fund campaign and ask that you consider The English-Speaking Union in the same way
that you do other educational and cultural organizations. Contributions to the general operating
account have helped make possible the funding of our annual membership booklets/rosters,
first membership brochure, and first newsletter. Contributions to the Endowment Fund help
ensure the long-term financial viability of the ESU. Your contributions to the Shakespeare
Initiatives Fund help support the annual Shakespeare Competition for high school students,
now held on the Upper Stage of the Indiana Repertory Theatre, since 1976 and the annual
Shakespeare Teachers' Workshop and Shakespeare Students' Workshop. Contributions to
the Scholarship Fund support the British Universities Summer School (BUSS) scholarship,
which has sent an Indiana high school teacher to Oxford, the Globe Centre, or the University of
Edinburgh, since 1976, and the ESU Fellow at Indiana University Bloomington, which has helped
support a British student at IU, since 1951.
Our Indianapolis Branch Annual Fund provides giving opportunities in four categories, which
are outlined below. A special feature is the Charles J. and Dorothy Lynn Society, our
distinguished giving society. Charles Lynn, an executive with Eli Lilly and Company, founded
the Indianapolis Branch of the ESU in 1949 and served as its president until 1958. Then, his wife,
Dorothy, assumed the presidency and served until 1973. We in this Branch owe much to the
Lynns and are pleased to take this opportunity to honor their memory. We ask that you consider
membership in the Charles J. and Dorothy Lynn Society as we seek to secure our financial
future and to expand our educational work. Members of the Lynn Society will be guests of the
Branch at our annual cocktail party preceding the Evelyn Wrench speaker program. All
contributors will be recognized at the annual Business Meeting/Garden Party/Celebration of the
Queen's Birthday in June and in the membership directory. Annual Fund giving categories are:
$1-99 - Friends of The English-Speaking Union
$100-499 - The Shakespeare Circle
$500-999 - The Sir Evelyn Wrench (founder of the ESU) Society
$1,000 and above - The Charles J. and Dorothy Lynn Society
Your gift to the Indianapolis Branch Annual Fund will be above and beyond your membership
dues and can be paid according to the payment schedule you prefer. You may designate your
gift to the Branch general operating fund, Scholarship Fund, Shakespeare Initiatives Fund,
Endowment Fund, or a combination of the four. Questions may be directed to Jim Fadely (573-
9906), president, or treasurer Becky Munday (684-5354).
Please join us in supporting the Indianapolis Branch Annual Fund. The English-Speaking Union
has played an important role in the cultural life of Indianapolis since 1949, and, with your help
and support, we will expand the ESU's contribution to the cultural life of this city and state. You
may make your pledge to the Annual Fund by completing and mailing the enclosed pledge form
to Mrs. Becky Munday, Treasurer, 2700 First Indiana Plaza, 135 N. Pennsylvania Street,
Indianapolis, Indiana 46204. As always, we appreciate your commitment to the ESU.
Sincerely,
Dr. James P. Fadely
